God’s pajamas

Whenever I leave the house to run errands, almost as soon as I get back home, my 4-year-old will come to me and hand me my pajamas and say “Here Mommy, put your dress back together.”  To translate his toddler speak, he wants me to put my pajamas back on.  He’s very adamant about it and it took me a few times, but I figured out why.   As long as I have on my jammies, he knows I’m not going anywhere else and so he can be confident that I will be staying at home with him.  Love that little guy!

For some of us, the idea of being alone is one of the most frightening things ever.  I don’t mean the “I’m home alone and scared of the dark” kind of alone.  I mean the alone where you really don’t feel like you have anyone you can turn to.  Like no one else could possibly understand what you’re going through….or really care for that matter.  Like you are a single entity in this cold cruel world destined to roam about in solitude.  I think we’ve all felt that way at one time or another.  We’ve all seen at least one time in our lives where we felt utterly alone.  I’d be willing to bet that many of us have at one time or another even felt that we’d been abandoned by God Himself.  That even the Creator of the Universe had hung us out to dry.

Beloved, let me clear up one thing.  God will never turn His back on you.  Never.  In fact, get this…He pursues you.  He loves to have talks with you over coffee.  He loves the way your hair smells.  The sound of your voice singing praises to Him is the most beautiful thing He’s ever heard.  He thinks that you are lovely and He desires for You to want Him more than anything else.  He is a jealous God…and you are the apple of His eye.  In fact, He makes us a promise in Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you;

He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

I can’t promise you that people in your life won’t hurt you.  In fact, I can almost guarantee you that they will.  We humans can be a selfish lot, seeking our own satisfaction and desires above others.  In fact, some of us can be downright mean at times.  It seems that the ones you rely on the most will sometimes be the ones that completely let you down.  But there will always be that One who stays by your side…He knew you before you were born.  He formed you with His own hands.  He blew breath into your body and gave you life.  You can trust Him.  He’s reliable to say the least!

So if you arrive at place where you suddenly feel like you have been deserted by everyone you care about, where you feel like you have no one left that you can rely on, where you feel like you are utterly and hopelessly alone, just remember this one thing…God always has on His pajamas and He’s not going anywhere.

  1. I continue to be proud of you and think you should share your thoughts in books for everyone to read.
    I love this story, and you figured Diego out exactly right!!

  2. Wow. This makes me excited to some day have kids. I’ve heard nightmarish stories, but I don’t care if I raise the devil’s child, if this happened to me once, it’d all be worth it. Brought tears to my eyes to think that God has his jammies on all the time. The symmetry is beautiful.

    • Thank you so much. Honestly, I cried when I wrote that one. God’s love for us is so big and so beautiful and the realization…true realization…that He’s right there with us and I can’t screw up enough to run Him off just overwhelms me.
